Gnarly Head Chardonnay 2009

16 / 20
Producer: Gnarly Head
Region:California
Country: USA

A californian Chardonnay showing a subtle, discreet bouquet where boiled apples and pears mingle with some honeyed notes and a subtle touch of oak.

Shows its weight on the palate, feeling unctuous but this is very well supported by a nice acidity and a orange-skin bitterness that is refreshing. It's a pleasant, not very complex white, very balanced (the 14% alcohol are not noticeable) that ends very pleasantly.

Loredona Monterey Riesling 2006

15.5 / 20
Producer: Loredona Vineyards
Region: California
Country: USA

Riesling is probably not the first grape type you associate with California. For me, at least, it certainly is not - Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay would probably be the first two to come to mind. But this 06 Riesling from Loredona Vineyards somehow found its way to our tastings and we were not at all badly impressed.

Light gold in color, aromas start off with a distinct impression of pencil rubber/eraser. Later, sweet tropical fruit appears in the combo. All very pleasant and light.

In the mouth, a round, delicate and elegant wine. A sweeter feel, lots of sweet tropical fruit in a slim body where the acidity should maybe be a bit higher - and it probably was when the wine was younger.

Brief, but very pleasant.

I would search for recent vintages - I think the 09 is in the market right now - if you wish to taste this. Although the wine was in perfect condition and very pleasant to drink, I think it must be even better when young.
