Adega Vila Real Grande Reserva 2008

16.5 / 20
Producer: Adega de Vila Real
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

A previous vintage of this wine has received a gold medal in some wine contest in the past, which provoked cries of "Best White Wine in the World is Portuguese" from some sectors of the press. A year or so later, a bottle of the newest vintage came into my possession and was dutifully tasted.

Pale yellow in color, the bouquet is filled with lemony notes. In the background some vanilla from the oak, but in a subtle, discreet approach that nevertheless engages and envolves the taster.

In the mouth, the wine is fresh and dry, with the citrus coming up full on. This impression is balanced by the creamier, heavier notes given by the oak resulting in a well-made, balanced and altogether enjoyable body. Finish is long and creamy.

For its price range, around 8€, this is a great buy.

As for being the best white wine in the world, well... no comments there.
