Bétula 2009

16.5 / 20
Producer: Carolina Montenegro
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

Slightly green in the glass, it starts by revealing a strong vegetable feel in the nose, the Sauvignon Blanc more to the foreground. A while later, some tropical fruit joins in rounding up a clear, crisp bouquet. As time goes on, it eventually reveals a scent of hazelnuts and other dried fruits, reminding us of the oak the wine was staged on.

Tasting it, I was surprised by the crisp, clear acidity the wine revealed. Dry and showing off some citrus notes that were not so clear in the nose, it has a good structure, very well balanced between the crisp acidity, the tropical fruit and a slight toasty, creamy impression from the oak. Good finish, long and intense.

Really liked the wine when paired with food, as it started to change and adapt, revealing a strong structure that was somewhat hidden before. Worth tracking down and worth checking out the next vintages (this is only the second year Bétula was produced).

Paired with a confit de canard and was very happy with the result. The wine's acidity cuts through the fat and, at the same time, the duck's creamy, fatty flavors help bring out the structure of the wine.
