Region: Douro
Country: Portugal
Touriga Franca (or Touriga Francesa) is one of the grape types involved in the typical Port wine blends in the Douro. This wine, a 100% Touriga Franca from the same region, is an unusual choice for a producer - actually, I don't recall at the moment another Touriga Franca varietal in the market.
A deeply coloured wine, the aromas start off with a smoky, coffe like scent with a lot of toast notes. Later on it opens to some blackberries (although not sweet), and still later a hint of flowers in the background. It brings to mind the typical Douro wine, although a bit heavier on the toast/coffee.
In the mouth, the toast notes predominate throughout the entire taste. A well balanced, ready to drink wine, it has an average body and a medium length finale. Tannins are well integrated into the set.
An honest, well-made wine that maybe lacks some flamboyance in order to impress and to aspire to greater things.
