A long established name in the Douro, Casa Ferreirinha (part of the Sogrape group now) has several top red wine brands - Barca Velha and Quinta da Leda, for instance.
Callabriga, while not in the same league as the previous examples, is a great wine. The 2007 vintage was excellent in the Douro and the wines I have tasted so far - both port and table wines - really show that.
The bouquet is elegant and intense, mixing earthy, musky notes with blackberries and spices and a hint of flowers in the background. As the wine was swirled in the glass, the bouquet changed and evolved revealing yet another layer of scent.
The taste follows through - beautifully balanced, with just the right amount of tannins, oak and fruit converging in a nicely structured, complex and full taste. Ends with fruit notes in a long, persistent finale.
A really good Douro that stands up to its better known brothers.
It's still a young, powerful wine so you should balance it with stronger, heavier foods. I paired it with a cassoulet de canard and it was bliss.
