Meandro do Vale Meão 2007

16.5 / 20
Producer: Francisco Olazabal
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

Meandro appeared in 2003, as a second brand to Quinta do Vale Meão, a wine that has been getting a lot of attention - as far as I know, rightfully - since its start some 12 years ago. The farm was used before that to provide grapes to Barca Velha, probably the first Douro table wine to achieve international recognition.

The 2007 Meandro comes from a vintage declared as outstanding in the Douro, so expectations were high.

Dark purple, the aromas hint at blackberries, violets and a strong spiced background. Later on, a toasty/smokey feel gets a bit stronger. A nice bouquet, although not overly complex.

Young in the mouth, powerful and showing a vibrant acidity. Yet, the tannins are very controlled and balanced, the fruit and the oak thoroughly balanced in a medium-bodied wine that finishes long with strong fruit and smoke notes.

Right now, this is a pleasurable, consistent wine. Not sure as how this wine will evolve over time. The 2003 is drinking really well nowadays, so maybe you should keep some 07 bottles for a couple years.
