Region: Dão
Country: Portugal
Vinha do Contador is a relatively new brand introduced by Dão Sul producing exceptional wines from the Dão region. This white wine is a nice example of those wines, reminding me that the Dão has a huge potential for serious white wines.
At four years old, this wine already had a deep yellow, almost golden color. The nose is complex, with several nuances appearing. First some sweet tropical fruit - passion fruit - and some wood notes. A bit later, boiled fruit and some flowers also come up with the oak lingering in the background.
The first impact on the taste is creamy and somewhat fat. Tropical fruits and vanilla seem to be the major axis where the wine is balanced. Overall, a good complex ensemble with a strong long finish marked by the oak but lacking a bit on acidity.
It is definitely a serious, complex wine worthy of being tasted. Yet, I also had the chance to taste the 2008 vintage a month ago and I must say it is superior to this one at this time. The 08 had a freshness and a gorgeous aroma reminiscent of lychees and other not so sweet tropical fruits which are not here on the 06. Maybe the wine is not meant for cellaring for more than two or three years or the 08 was simply a better vintage.
Anyway, either vintage is worthy of your time so try to track them down.
It complemented really well a creamy monkfish with mustard. I would pair it with heavier fish dishes.
