Redoma Reserva 2006

17.0 / 20
Producer: Niepoort
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

Redoma reserva has the reputation of being one of the best white wines in Portugal. And this bottle certainly lived up to that reputation, although I was a bit afraid that, being from 2006, the wine was already past its prime. Happily, following a Bourgogne-like approach makes for longer lived wines: the wine was perfect in its freshness and balance and probably could live for some more years.

The bouquet shows some sweet tropical fruit that is balanced by some oak notes - toast and vanilla. A scent of almonds in the background finishes off an exquisite, sophisticated and balanced nose. Everything in its right proportion.

The taste follows the bouquet. A fully structured, full-bodied, creamy, serious white - the oak staging leaves its mark - that manages not to become too heavy. The great acidity and the fruit notes help to keep a great balance throughout the tasting, finishing in a long, pleasant aftertaste.

A beautiful wine in its seriousness and complexity, it certainly deserves, in my book, the reputation of being one of the best whites in Portugal (if not the best).

It was heavenly matched with a Porcini risotto. The creaminess of the risotto complemented the heavier texture of the wine, while its acidity kept the whole thing from becoming too heavy.
