Region: Setúbal
Country: Portugal
A 100% Castelão from Setúbal, the main difference between this Reserva and the common brand is an extra 4 months in oak barrels (8 instead of 4) and a 4 month staging in bottle.
To the nose, this exhibits the expected aromas of a Castelão from Setúbal: Red ripe fruits (strawberries) with a hint of something sweeter and darker in the back (caramel, maybe). The oak staging has left its mark but in a very subtle and discreet fashion. A vanilla or oak note occasionally surfaces in the bouquet.
Average-bodied, full of strawberries, simple and easy to drink. Acidity is balanced, tannins are soft putting this wine squarely in the relaxed, day-to-day consumption target. But a good contender for a top place in the category.
