Esporão Private Selection 2007

15.5 / 20
Producer: Herdade do Esporão
Region: Alentejo
Country: Portugal

I remember tasting this a year or so ago and being very impressed by the sophistication and power it had to offer. A bit too heavy on the oak but other than that a very good serious, winter white.

A year on and it has clearly started to lose its momentum. The nose starts off with oxidized notes, showing a clear evolution. They tend to disappear over time and are replaced by almond, hazelnut and an oaky, buttery feel. Unfortunately, the tropical fruit that used to balance this is no longer present - or very much to the background.

The mouth also shows a older wine, still strong on the oak and very unctuous, full bodied even, but low on the acidity and the fruit that keep it from becoming too unidimensional. Long persistence.

I would urge you to drink it up as soon as possible or to focus on later vintages - from what I've read, the 2009 is really good - as the 2007 does not seem to have much more to offer. I still have a bottle left, which I intend to drink very soon.
