Region: Douro
Country: Portugal
Quinta do Noval is a widely known name in Port wines, making some of the most expensive vintages in the market (Nacional 1966, for instance). Table wines are a more recent venture, and this is the first vintage - if I'm not mistaken - for this Syrah. An unusual choice for a wine from the Douro, but it worked out quite well, the Syrah being the mean to express the Douro and not the other way round.
Very dark in color, the nose is very intense - black berries and plums along with oak and toast notes, supported by a strong spicy feel, with pepper coming to mind several times. Very impressive.
In the mouth, the same feeling of intensity, in a very textured, austere and dry wine. Supported by black fruit notes - later turning into chocolate notes - and some very elegant tannins, it is a very structured wine, with a long persistence.
It would be interesting to taste this along with other Syrahs from other regions. My guess is that it would stand out as being quite different.
