Monte da Cal Antão Vaz Viognier 2009

16.0 / 20
Producer: Dão Sul
Region: Alentejo
Country: Portugal

Unusual blend from the Alentejo, this white from Dão Sul was a really nice surprise.

Aromas of pears, flowers, discreet tropical fruit and a hint of mineral and some citrus notes in the background make up the bouquet. All very clean and fresh.

To the taste, a very well structured wine, creamy in texture. To balance this weight, a citrus-filled crisp acidity pervades the whole taste - the aftertaste at points brings to mind lemons. Behind this, one can feel some sweeter tropical fruit.

So, the unusual blend produced an unusual, but very worthwhile, wine. Track it down.

This will probably go down well with fattier dishes, as the acidity will cut through the fat and the fat will match the creamier body of the wine. Salmon and cream based dishes, confit au canard, probably something with fish and cheese would be the kind of thing I would try with it.
