Vinha de Saturno 2009

16.5 / 20
Producer: Global Wines
Region: Alentejo
Country: Portugal

Coming from Monte da Cal, the Alentejo farm owned by Dão Sul, this is their top brand - the white version was made with 100% Alvarinho, an unusual choice for an Alentejo white, although this is the second I've tasted in the last months, the first being Scala Coelli from Cartuxa.

Anyway, the wine has a deep, golden color and a bouquet where a lot of tropical, sweet fruits combine with vanilla and toast. There are also some flower impressions and a hint of spices - white pepper, maybe?

Despite the obvious oak notes, the bouquet still manages to be quite fresh and light.

Lots of structure in the palate, unctuous and exhibiting lots of oak notes, well integrated but overpowering the fruit. Balanced acidity, just enough to keep it lively and counterpoint the wine's weight, this comes along as a very good example of a serious, oak staged, wintery white from the Alentejo. Long finale with notes of spices again lingering in the aftertaste.
