Yet another trophy from a wine auction, this was another shot in the dark. A very fine old port when it was originally bottled, the bottle must have been kept for a lot of time - judging from the eaten away label. I have no idea on how old this wine really was, but it was a great experience
A dark brown color greeted us on the glass, releasing sweet aromas reminding me of raisins, almonds, dried plums and syrup. A consistent aroma, albeit a little single minded.
In the mouth, it confirms the sweetness, with syrup and raisins quite to the foreground. It has a lot of residual sugar, so we drunk it a bit colder than usual (maybe 14º), but it is immensely enjoyable and has a never ending persistence, lingering in the mouth for ages.
Objectively, the wine had already peaked and was on its descending journey, since there was no acidity, no tannins and almost no fruit left. But still, a great experience and a great tasting. Will definitely keep my eyes open for more wine auctions nearby.
By itself, of course.
