Gaivosa Primeiros Anos 2008

15.5 / 20
Producer: Alves de Sousa
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

Alves de Sousa is a top producer from the Douro, with brands like Abandonado, Quinta da Gaivosa or his Reserva Pessoal consistently appearing in Douro tops and best of lists.

I believe this wine is made from grapes coming from young vines planted at Quinta da Gaivosa. It certainly shows its youth in all aspects. Very dark, showing a fresh bouquet where black plums and blackberries appear very strong, along with a strong oak/smoky feel. Maybe in the background, a floral note. A young, fresh Douro all around.

Tasting it, the youth impression carries on, being very intense, with a lot of vanilla notes from the oak along with vibrant fruit notes. Dry, very present tannins give it some structure.

Although not in the league of the other wines from this producer - and it's not supposed to be, this is a nicely crafted young Douro which will probably hold for some years.

Right now, it needs a strong match given its youth. Roasted kid goat or lamb will probably go along very well.
