Olho no Pé Grande Reserva 2008

15.5 / 20
Producer: Folias de Baco
Region: Douro
Country: Portugal

A quite different white from the Douro, this has a deep golden color. In the nose, some fleshy, sweet tropical fruits compete with honey notes, along with a malty feel. Quite intense and very rich, very expressive bouquet.

In the palate, this is a full bodied, unctuous wine with a big structure. Oaky, buttery notes that were not altogether apparent in the nose come forward and share the stage with sweet, meaty tropical fruits. Balanced acidity keeps it from becoming too heavy. Fat, heavy finish showing again notes of malt and honey and an interesting dryness that gives it some spirit.

Although marked at 14.5% alcohol, it is really well integrated, so it does not mark the taste in any way. However, it makes the wine a bit too heavy for my taste. Definitely needs very strong food to go with it.

A really different profile from most whites in the Douro, I would recommend this if you're looking for something a bit different - and you should always be looking for that.
