Solar dos Lobos Grande Escolha 2008

17.0 / 20
Producer: Lobo da Silveira
Region: Alentejo
Country: Portugal

Made from Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional, this red from Alentejo has been collecting awards left and right. And deservedly so, since it is a truly outstanding wine.

Almost black in the glass, the nose gives us lots of ripe dark cherries, balanced by a toast impression and elegant spices. On the background, a splash of violets and, a bit later on, a slight mineral feel - wet stones came to mind. A distinct, strong and intense bouquet.

Very young and fresh to the taste, showing the same dark cherries as in the nose. Good, fresh acidity with the oak already nicely mingled with the set, the taste is permeated by dry, fine tannins that give it a lot of structure without making this a chewy, mouth-filling wine.

A really good, dry and very persistent finish rounds up the taste.

Given the structure of the wine, I would say this will age very well for some years. If you can, save a few bottles to taste it four or five years from now. I think it will be worth it.
